If the shoe fits…

Every now and then I get a little disappointed in myself that I've tossed my personal guidelines aside. Let me explain. I loathe when people are boastful or lack humility, and I realize there's the distinct possibility that yesterday's post, the Bonanno-o-rama, or any like it, may come off as boastful.

So first and foremost, let me offer my most sincere apology. I truly don't mean to be garish and offensive.

And second… let me tell you a little ditty that I think might shed some light on the situation.

. . .

When I was a little girl (oh… it always starts like that, doesn't it?) I had the most difficult time fitting into shoes. Three, four, five years old and we could never just go to the department store to pick up a cute pair of Mary Janes or Saddle Shoes. I had all these sweet little dresses and nothing equally sweet to wear them with.

I had to go to "The Special Shoe Store."

I'm not kidding. I had to go to a specialty (read: freak) store to get shoes because my feet were so ridiculously wide. I still remember them being judged measured in that metal foot measure-y thing and the sales man yelling out like a carnival barker "Triple E"! (Maybe he didn't yell, but it sure sounded like it to my humiliated, little five-year-old ears.)

EEE!!!

Needless to say, this was horribly embarrassing. Big Foot Leesie. That's what they called me. Okay, they didn't really call me that, but I betcha they would have if they'd known I was three and a half feet tall with Triple E width feet! So I had to wear those uggo Buster Brown shoes for "special" kids with "special" feet from the "special" store. I hated them.

(See those red ones in row 2 up there? I had those. They were horrid. And the white high-top ones that look like Doc Martens? Yeah, I had those too! Ugh.)

Parenthetically, I also hated the cable knit leotards mommy made me wear because they sagged at the crotch and they hurt my chubby thighs as they rubbed together. But this is not a story of the scars I bear because of those repulsive leotards. It's about the feet. The big big big feet.

. . .

Later on in my so very sad life, I had a smashing pair of white wellies just like my mom's. I was eight or nine years old, and believe it or not, mommy's wellies were a size smaller than mine. One day, I had mistakenly put hers on instead of mine, with bare feet no less, and when it came time to come in from playing in the puddles, I couldn't get them off!

My big fat feet were suctioned right into the damn boots and there was no budging them. I tugged and pulled and stretched, yet all I did was discover another way to make a farting sound. The boots were S.T.U.C.K. stuck. I cried and cried, "Get them off meeeeeee!"

I'm sorry to report those boots met their tragic end that day when my mom had to literally cut them off with scissors to free me from my self-imposed pedalian, rubber prison.

. . .

Flash forward with me now to the year 2006 and the day my world changed. I was practically wearing cardboard cereal boxes tied to my feet when I read about a sandal company in Florida that made the most delightful, handmade, leather footwear. Not only was the product beautiful and affordable, it was – excuse me whilst I choke back the tears a moment – custom made to fit.

Do you understand what I'm saying here? Custom. Made. To. Fit.

I swear to you, it was like for the first time in my life I was one of the cool kids. I could be part of the gang. They could no longer laugh at me and point at the hideous, flapping monstrosities pulsating and oozing at the end of my legs. They wouldn't throw stones at me anymore. I no longer had to wear UGGs to church in the summer!

Yep that's my story. Stephen Bonanno Sandals offered me everything I ever wanted in footwear. Surely one can forgive me for being a tad over indulgent in the pursuit of happy feet?

. . .

Epilogue
In the winter I wear one of two pairs of ballet flats, or one of three pairs of UGGs. That's all I have. That's all I wear.

I feel you foot pain! I've always had wide feet. Question about your sandals...do you feel like they offer any support? I've toyed with buying some but )m afraid there wouldn't be enough support...
love your collection.

You have earned the right to talk about on your blog any subject that you feel you want to.

While you have a grand collection of fabulous shoes I do not feel that you were in any way being overly boastful.

The young woman in the first picture perhaps is that way along with the rest of her family. But I guess they feel they must be.

Amy,
The sandals do offer minimal support. The soles eventually form to your foot and there is also a metal shank in the foot bed for strength and arch support. I only found that out after my friend went through the metal detector at an airport and practically stripped naked before she realized it was the sandals that were setting off the machine!

Thank you so much for posting this. I have always hated my wide Fred Flintstone feet! During the summer, when everyone wears adorable sandals, I am soo envious. Most stores that sell "wide" sandals around here look like they are orthopedic, old lady shoes. I love your blog and your style...it never feels boastful at all!

You rock. Have been reading your blog for probably close to three years. Never posted..... just read....... and truly enjoyed. Love your collection and after reading your story sooooo happy they named a shoe after you. If I were a little girl again (oh and Canadian) I would have wanted to be your friend, wide feet and all. Have a happy day and show us more photos of you wearing those shoes, you look greattttttt!

Oh, I am laughing so hard! You deserve every pair of those sandals and more! Just because you are you.

You are entitled to buying however many pairs of shoes you want, without being judged! you don't need to apologize at all! I have a cousin with similar wide feet and she has struggled over the years. She lives in Texas now and LIVES in bonnanos for the same reasons you do!

I didn't think you were being boastful. You deserve those shoes. I have the opposite problem. I had to wear the "special" shoes because normal shoes were too wide, plus my feet were so long also. I had long narrow feet. I finally grew into them. I still wear the same size shoe that I wore in fifth grade.

Oh the boot story - SO sad! And the mean shoe man! I feel about my over-curly, red hair the way you do about your feet - it was TOO much of a defining feature as a kid! -Katie

Girl, no need to explain, although I appreciate the glimpse into your childhood angst. My mother cut my hair herself until I was in the EIGHTH GRADE. So now? Believe me, no amount is too much for me to spend to try to get my hair the way I want it!!!

Anyone who follows your blog regularly knows what a kind, un-garish (!) person you are!

Amen fellow wide feet sufferer! I have the same foot story growing up,funky "special" shoes I loathed!, if it makes you feel better about your collection,I own over 30 pairs of Chuck Taylor Converse All Stars!, they fit, they are cute and I adore them !, Go on and buy up more sandals ! My 10 year old daughter now has a size 7 EEE foot herself and I bought her a pair of Chucks for school ( instep inserts rule) so she could have some cuteness on her feet lol!,

I had those red shoes and LOVED them . Although mine were not exceptionally wide.....

I am so not a fan of the Miss Listy McLister blogs and your post did not sound like that at all to me.

However, if you feel like you have too many sandals, I will send you my address!

I love your colorful collection and am happy to see them any time you want to post pictures. I also had (and still have) very wide feet but I'm also cursed with big feet. I am only 5'3" but wear size 10.5. I think I'm the shortest person with the biggest feet ever. xo xo

I see your wide feet and raise you two ugly bunions! Nonetheless, I feel sad that you felt the need to post this apology of sorts. I hope you didn't hear form any nasties in response to your pretty sandal rainbow...if so, the hater's no friend of mine. xoxo

I was so excited when I saw your blog on "adozeneggs". A bit silly but it was like seeing an old friend - even though we've never met & I rarely commented on your blog. Always loved your craft ideas, your writing & your humor. Side note...I wear a size 5 EEEE shoe :( & love your sandals.

My most dearly beloved is a quadruple E. I feel your pain for sure. I thought I had it bad wearing a somewhat uncommon bra size until I realized what it was like trying to find EEEE shoes. fwiw, growing up we were only allowed to wear Buster Brown shoes as my father felt all other shoes were inferior. Fortunately we had a grandmother who liked to shop at Bonwits...

I was right there with you in the Buster Browns and Stride Rights...except I had the opposite problem, super skinny feet PLUS I had to wear corrective shoes for a leg abnormality! Every back-to-school (and pre-Easter) shopping trip would end with me in tears over shoes. I would literally walk right out of any shoe not specially ordered to fit my narrow foot!

Fast forward 30+ years, and I still have the same issue--I am very limited in the type of shoe I can wear because I cant keep them on my feet. I also love the fact that one can order Bonannos with a different size upper and sole! I have far fewer pairs than you, but totally endorse your philosophy...when you find something that fits AND that you like, buy in multiples!

Fondly,
A girl who is 5'1" with size 8 AAA/AAAA heel feet and has at least 10 of the EXACT SAME black skinny ribbed cashmere turtleneck!
